I’m leaving on a Jet Plane…but I do know when I will be back again

Due to some unforeseen family responsibilities I will be leaving San Francisco for New York this evening. I’m headed to the beautiful Finger Lakes area of New York (the State’s wine country) for 2 weeks. The picture’s of Canandaigua Lake, which was the closest of the Finger Lakes to my childhood hometown of Shortsville. Even though the trip is to take care of some personal business, fear not, I have packed my digital camera and camcorder and hope to continue filming and posting on location from my Mom’s spare bedroom.

The disturbing photo you see on the right is the infamous “Garbage Plate” invented nearby in Rochester, NY (photo from roadfood.com). This controversial culinary concoction has been called by some “the worst dish in America,” yet many locals swear by it (they’re usually drunk while doing so), calling it the ultimate late-night indulgence. I shall investigate this bizarre dish, and many other local delicacies, as I attempt to do a cheap imitation of Anthony Bourdain’s show “No Reservations” he does for the Travel Channel.

I’m not exactly sure when and how often I will be posting during the next couple weeks, but will try to get something up on the blog at least a few times a week. And, with any luck I will be able to film a few of my family’s secret recipes for you all to enjoy. Stay tuned!

Well I hope you have a nice time, maybe you can spend time with your family on your birthday. ;) Oh and happy pre-birthday. What is in that dish any way, it looks like macaroni, sausage, chili, and potatoe?

Take good care of Pauline; have fun while back in your old stomping grounds; take your cameras with you - everywhere - (think tax deduction); and then come home to SF and Michele, all rested and feeling at the top of your game!

Go Giants!

Love you, Peggy & Al

I'm in Farmington (about 6 miles north of the lake) - welcome back to the area. I do like a garbage plate now and then. I like to get eggs and sausage on mine, but the only place that made them like that went out of business. Since that, my favorite place to get a plate is Empire Hots off Empire Blvd up in Irondequoit. To really experience the garbage plate, you need to finish the plate, then scrape up the juice and bits using the two hunks of bread. Anything else is wimping out! ;) Enjoy, and don't forget to use lots of Tabasco.

Hey Chef John you are headed my way. I live in Rochester NY and happen to love Nick Tahoes Garbage Plate you have to go to the original Nick Tahoes which is in Downtown Rochester. The other one just isn't the same. Granted it isn't something you should eat everyday(Cholesterol Special lol)but it is tasty( I get mine with the cheeseburgers on top, home fries and macaroni salad, hot sauce, onions....the works)bring along your "Tums". I'm only about 45 minutes from the wine trails, you are in for quite a treat. We have some amazing wines here we have a little winery called "Four Chimneys" that is next to an Amish Farm that grows Honeydew Melon the Amish Farmers give the winery their excess Honeydews and they make a wine called "Honeydew Moon" it is wonderful.
I realize that this trip isn't all pleasure but I do hope you are able to enjoy some of the beauty NY has to offer.

Happy Birthday, Chef John you really deserve it! :) You have been a great chef you out your life. What do I mean have, you are! Hopefully you'll find a Kwik-E-Mart in NY. You have been a wonderful inspiration to me, thank you. Have a great day, have your cake and eat it too. :)
