The "Squeezing Blood from a Turnip" Test - Phase 1

This scrumptious beef short rib recipe was first aired last February, when the blog was brand new, and I hadn't yet realized my free video recipe business model had a serious flaw. Apparently, if you spend more than you bring in, you don't make what my accountant calls a "profit."

To keep the site up and running, I've been posting video recipes I produce for About.com. While I enjoy doing them, I want to be able to do a lot more of my own clips. So, with that in mind, I'm reposting this clip to test a new way to generate some revenue. As you'll see, I've embedded some Amazon.com product advertising over the video.

Comments are welcome, unless you're just going to say, "I like them better without the ads." Without further ado, I present "Braised Beef Short Ribs with Chocolate and Cinnamon," now with annoying popup advertising! Enjoy.

The ads did not bother me. If it helps keep the post coming I say go for it and thank you for it. Still not sure about chocolate ribs but may give them a try.

It didn't bother me at all to have the ads in there. I hope it works out for you & maybe you can generate some revenue. You've given a lot to us & some of us really appreciate it!!! I think quite a lot of people would like to see some of the equipment you use & promote. I know I would buy some of those things. Thanks again Chef John!!

I DO like the videos without the ads, BUT anything to survive, I guess. Anyways, do you earn money for just snding in the video, or if the popup appears, or what? Cause I have a loophole so that it won't bother people without costing you money...if that is the case.

Chocolate with meat isn't such a weird combination.... have you tried Mo's Bacon Bars by Vosges?? Kinda weird, but... interesting.

Ok, this recipe looks fantabulous. You make it look so very easy!

The ads are not a problem. Good idea to monetize your site!

Well, I just left a comment... and back to Mo's Bacon Bar - I just saw your post on that...!

thanks for all the comments!

Freak, I make a commission when someone buys a product I've embedded.

BTW, to all of you thinking of trying the dish the chocolate works great, it doesnt really have a chocolate flavor. Its definitely a savory dish. Like a mole.

Sounds Great! I'll have to try it! btw.. hint hint.. I need to order a new salt grinder and a 12" stainless pan.. not sure if you can take requests for your ads (which I don't mind.. becuse the way you have them embedded is quite awsome!)

gulf, you can click the banner at the bottom of the page and I still get the referral. Thanks!

yeah...the ads aren't too bad. the only deal is that i can't maximize these video. couple suggestions would be that a site like megavideo does pay you to upload your vids., so that may help. and also, would it be possible to post higher quality videos through sites that offer "hd" content?

some suggestions. thanks for the recipes as always.

I totally agree!

"gulf, you can click the banner at the bottom of the page and I still get the referral."

Does it work that way for the whole Amazon site, or just food-related shopping? Reason being, I do a good amount of shopping through Amazon for lots of household stuff that I can get cheaper than going to a traditional store. If you get some credit no matter what's bought, I'd be happy to link through the banner at the bottom of your page whenever I do my normal Amazon shopping.

You've got a great site going, and I love your videos, they've definitely given me great meals and ideas that my friends and fiance have all raved about. Sincere appreciation, Chef John.

i'm not sure if you're notified about comments on other entries, SO: i was wondering - i've been gathering ingredients to make the braised chicken with artichoke hearts and so forth, and i can't seem to find fresh thyme ANYWHERE. can i substitute dried thyme - and how much would i use?

and the ads aren't that bad! =P

Yes, I believe that anything someone buys once they arrive to the site will have my tracking number. Click away! Thanks!!

channing, I get notices for all comments. I would use about 1/2 tsp. thyme

Dont mind the popups at all. Love the recipe! I use chocolate on my ribs too. I'm looking forward to trying your recipe.

Dont know if any one else had this problem but the last 1.6 minutes didn't play. Ive never had that problem with videos before. I watched the original without a hitch.

Thanks for such a great site!

Hi Chef... the ads didn't bother me either. I'll be sure to link through your site next time I plan on shopping on Amazon.

Of course I like your videos without the ads as opposed to with the ads, but if I had to be honest I didn't even notice them all that much. I even missed the digital timer ad (I actually went back to see if it actually came up! What a glutton for punishment I am).
Suggestions : The vids are too small, not sure if you can help that though. And you may want to consider framing your videos to accommodate the bottom of the frame being clipped from the Amazon impending popup. Again, it's a much smaller player to begin with and with the overlapping Amazon ad at the bottom it makes the video cramped / small / not as comfortable to watch.
I have been known to make one or two purchases a year on Amazon and would be happy to do it through your site, no problem.

BTW, I can never find fresh thyme either! Not sure why.

Chef John, with all of these great recipes, where are we ever gonna find the thyme?!

Thanks again to all for your comments and suggestions!

For all you thyme deficient folks; it grows great in the window sill. Also, ask the produce guy, every major grocery chain carries it or can.

Chef John, your videos are always informative & entertaining! I love this combination & will try this recipe this weekend! Cheers!

I love your videos, and I have no problems with you putting pop ups or whatever ad you want... the great part about your job is that you get to eat your profits :D Btw can you use a white wine or red or even a nice bottle of cognac instead of the cherry...

Regarding finding thyme :
I noticed about 3 years ago when trying to make homemade chicken soup that thyme was scarce / almost non-existent in the winter up here. I live near 4 big supermarkets and shop at them all for different things, and last week was the first time I've seen it in stock in 3 years!
It's weird. I recently overheard a woman asking a Whole Foods grocer here about why she can never find thyme stocked! I, of course, butted in and told them of my woes. The grocer said he wasn't sure either.

I say CONSPIRACY! Another plot to make me grow things in my own window sill! Don't they realize I have other things growing there?!?.. like mold... and spider webs...

I really don't know why it's so scarce up here.

Anyways, I don't grow it (yet?), and so alas, I have no thyme for chicken soup.

Hey scott, the chowder's not as good, and the baseball team stinks, but you could also move to SF.

Not only didn't I mind the adds, but I didn't realize that Lodge makes a Le Creuset competitor that's about a quarter the cost of Le Creuset. Yeah, I'm sure Le Creuset is great, but, well, I've never gotten around to buying one because of the cost, but I'm buying this one.

I'll make sure to do off your site link. Thanks, Chef John!
