What We Had for Lunch

While running some supplies up to the Frick Winery in preparation for our big event this weekend, we made a pit stop in beautiful Healdsburg. I've wanted to try the famous pork cheek sandwich at Bovolo Restaurant for the longest time, and it was well worth the wait.

The tender, rich cheek sat on a crusty toasted roll, slathered in an intensely-flavored salsa verde and roasted sweet peppers. We also shared a charcuterie plate, and Michele had a lovely fried green tomato BLT. Enjoy!

Pork Cheeks are otherworldly. That just looks too good!
That just may be the best looking meal ever. I wonder how the green tomato tasted compared to a regular ripe red one.

kinda firm and tart vs soft and sweet

One of my favorite sandwich places makes a great FGT/BLT and puts a fresh mango chutney on it. Yummm. Another makes them with sugared bacon. Another yum.

Are pork cheeks the same as hog jowls? Here in the South hog jowls are eaten as one of the traditonal New Year's foods along with greens and black eyed peas.

i believe they are the same

Chef, please make a Chef John version of the pork cheek sandwich for us???? It looks amazing, and I know you're very capable!! Unsure what a pork cheek/jowl is, but maybe you could make it with a butt? !!

Thanks, Breeze

Thanks for the tip. I'd have never tried a pork jowel. I thought they were just skin and fat. Now we've got a new taste to discover!

Pork cheek, om nom nom nom nom.

In Spain, Salamanca to be exact, they have yummy grilled pork cheek tapas. If grilled properly it's just to die for (some people cheat and the burn it or it's too chewy)
