But you have to stop and wonder why someone would call their establishment the "Original" anything. I've got a sneaky suspicion there were other, maybe even "original," pancake houses out there and that this Portland offing, fine as it may be, at some point wanted to distinguish itself from other original purveyors of the pancake. For my money, origins are meaningless; I just want good food.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173052990851751381.post-52421271487696547472012-08-04T01:28:05.539-04:002012-08-04T01:28:05.539-04:00Back in the day (60s and 70s), San Francisco's...Back in the day (60s and 70s), San Francisco's Inner Richmond District had a large Russian and East European community, and bakery and restaurants that sold old country pierogi's and other foods. Clement and Geary St became a predominantly asian business district, but I'll bet there are still a few hold out places where you can get a great pierogi. Having moved away and lost touch I can only speculate that there must be some holdovers that just require a little research to find. A future assignment: Do the research, and tell us how to make a pierogi like they're hopefully still making in my old neighborhood. (Check out Geary around 20th Ave or so)Judnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173052990851751381.post-69843054617135422922012-08-03T22:08:32.270-04:002012-08-03T22:08:32.270-04:00Thanks!!Thanks!!Chef Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15030125427840815038noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173052990851751381.post-19675092402743084632012-08-03T21:39:11.391-04:002012-08-03T21:39:11.391-04:00I've got a great popover recipe and it's s...I've got a great popover recipe and it's stupid easy and adaptable.

Mix 1 c. flour and 1/2 tsp. salt and add 2 eggs and 1 c. milk. Mix it well with a spoon, NO NEED TO BEAT THIS (really!) Fill well greased muffin tins about 1/2 to 3/4 full with batter. Put um in a COLD oven set to 450 and bake exactly 30 mins. NO PEAKING ALLOWED (this is crucial!).

Makes a dozen or so popovers. I like to sprinkle the tops with some sharp cheddar cheese, but they are really quite good just like this! Hope you give it a try.Elizzaruthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15663326166746028683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173052990851751381.post-50425682747832301422012-08-02T13:06:55.101-04:002012-08-02T13:06:55.101-04:00Although I have never had the privilege of staying...Although I have never had the privilege of staying at Public Chicago, I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express onceAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173052990851751381.post-89328762126015603332012-08-02T04:12:52.672-04:002012-08-02T04:12:52.672-04:00What a cool recount of your trip! You don't visit Chicago without going to Hot Doug's, ESPECIALLY as a foodie. You're going to have to go back and do it right this time. ;):)https://www.blogger.com/profile/00964944129664826018noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7173052990851751381.post-35548317564495744562012-08-02T00:30:37.120-04:002012-08-02T00:30:37.120-04:00Yup, The Original Pancake House and its signature ...Yup, The Original Pancake House and its signature creation the "Dutch Baby" is from the culinary town of Portland, Oregon.
