Canned Cheeseburgers? How do you say WTF in German?

As the old cliché goes, you just can't make this stuff up. The photo you see here has not been doctored. It's directly from the German website Trekking-Mahlzeiten, which offers ready-made meals for hikers. They're selling, for $3.95 euros each, a canned cheeseburger. Of all the food products I've wished existed, I can say that a canned cheeseburger has never crossed my mind. I've added a link to the site in hopes that someone orders one, and writes a review for the site. Frankly, I just don't have the guts to try one myself.

As disturbing as the thought of a canned cheeseburger is, what really bothers me about the photo are the garnishes. I'm assuming it doesn't come dressed with lettuce and tomato, and that these are just "serving suggestions" to make the whole thing seem less horrible. But, cucumbers? Cucumbers? Do German's put cucumbers on their cheeseburgers? Imagine the shame for the citizens of Hamburg. It's enough to make you want to move to Frankfurt.

UPDATE!!!
Thanks to a tip from scallywag, here is a live taste test of the above mentioned canned cheeseburger! I don't speak German, but you really don't have to in order to understand this review. Enjoy?

I used to belong to Nutri systems, oh 20 years ago. My favorite meal was the dehydrated hamburger. It came in a foil pouch. It looks like dried styrofoam. You put water on it and it puffed up and looked and tasted like a burger. Probably meat flavored sponge. But I liked it. Probably because I was so hungy anything tasted good.

mmmmm....meat flavored sponge

I'm italian and live in Germany. Thanks God I have never seen something like that. It's almost worst than the canned ravioli with tomato sauce...!

I believe it goes something like, "Was fickt das?"
Catherine, the redhead

Hao said...

It gives new meaning to the phrase:
"1 can has cheeseburger"

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Actually there is no analogy to wtf in german.

but from time to time you get to hear "Was zum Fick"?
Coming from "Was zur Hölle" (What the hell)

Greets :-)

I'm doing Nutrisystem now and am sad that I've yet to encounter the burger. All I know is that I look at this site while eating my 200 calorie meal. It makes me feel better... like taste bud porn.

its a pleasure to tease you!

Pfui, and pfui again ! As a grad student in Germany I had to eat military rations on a botanical excursion in 1980: same stuff. They actually mixed beef with shredded pancakes in one pouch, which you heated in boiling water ! Scarred me for life ... WTF = Was zum Teufel (what the devil) in the South.
Just found your site - looks great, very informative. Will make the stuffed pork tenderloin tonight. Then on to the Strudel

I'm an actual German living in Germany, and I haven't encountered anyone who ever heard of canned cheeseburger! It was a first for me, too.
But after I watched the video I'm pretty sure the guy eating it was Austrian. And in Austria they actually traditionally put cucumbers on their burgers, wouldn't surprise me if they invented this ... whatever it is (I refuse to label it Cheeseburger)!

BTW, love your website!

Yeah, he is Austrian but the burger is from a German company. And no, net even Austrians put cucumber on their cheeseburgers.

No Germans do not put cucumber in their Burger...and Scheisse (pronounced as shy-se) can be used as synonym for WTF, which is generally used in everyday speaking language.

Kätzchen said...

Actually, I found cucumber on several burgers here in Germany, alas, all served in "American style" burger restaurants.

And I wouldn't say scheiße is synonymous for WTF, since it lacks the disbelieving element...

Yes, Marion blame the Austrians again... WTF is by the way WZF - either you say WTF with German accent: "WHAT ZEE FACK?" or translate it literally to "Was zum Fick?" That means the same.

I actually ate stuff like this on manoeuvre while drafted in the German military. I'm very sure that this is one of the producers that also makes the food for the EPA (Einmannpackung). They had 3 different Nato-standardized-rations, and you are even thankful that for once you got this ratio and not the bean-gruel or goulash (camouflage-coloured) out of the 100 liters-pot which would mess up your cookware again. Nothing worse than half-cleaned cookware while in the field.

Anyway, if you had to eat this kind of things for a while you really learn to appreciate fresh home-cooked food.
Thanks Chef John!

In my country we have precooked patys inside of a plastic bag so the only thing you have to do is boil that bag for a few minutes and it's done

wtf = "Was zum Henker...?!"

But Germans would prefer driving to McD or BK than eating something like that! ;-)

I have eaten burgers with cucumbers in them in Hungary as well. Also ones with sauerkraut, roasted peppers, coleslaw, etc.
It's often treated as a normal sandwich, which happens to have a burger patty in it, instead of cold cuts.

it's not a total loss, you can save the can to use as a mold for homemade english muffins

I'm German and I have yet to see a single burger with cucumber on it. Pickles are standard.
Also, if you want to say wtf in German, say wtf. You just have to say the letters in German. It's commonly used.

It surprises me to read so many negative reactions to the 'cucmber scandal'.
The evolution of all cuisine has always been a question of trying and daring. The German invention 'hamburger' has given us all the possibility and inspiration to experiment 'selon le goût de chacun' and I think there are probably worse than 'cucumber on a cheeseburger'.
Try the unusual, and your creativity will lead you to new horizons;)
In northern Germany they eat their fries with mayonnaise ^^!
The Brits pour vinegar on them ^^!
In France some people eat them with mustard ;)
Just free yourself from mental slavery and enjoy.

Nice Bob Marley reference!

The translation for wtf is Was das fickt

I am from CT, but lived in Germany over the Summer and this does not surprise me at all. And yes, somehow the occassional cucumber will find it's way onto a burger. Surprisingly, it is hard to find good pickles!

What would you take frome these?!
-> Cheeseburger

Cucumber on a burger sounds fine to me but the burger in a can... if It was means of survivle, I would easly eat this thing but as soon as I was back in the civilised world id go for a good colonics treatment as I dont believe that kind of texture realy comes out of your body properly and definitly does not conribute to it.
Blahh!

Call me crazy but I'm pretty sure that, in America at least, McDonalds and Burger King serve every hamburger and every cheeseburger with pickled cucumber slices on them. Y'all must be used to having it 'your way'(sans cucumber).
