Jamie Oliver's Parents’ Spicy Butternut Squash Soup… Because I Have Gas Problems

I had a lovely apple-braised pork shoulder recipe all set to post today, but was unable to finish it off because PG&E turned off the gas line to do repairs on our street. So, stay tuned for that tomorrow, but in the meantime, here’s a great butternut squash soup video from Trevor and Sally Oliver, parents of celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. Jamie’s one of my favorites, and not only are his parents adorable, but you can see where he gets some of his skills from. Enjoy!

This video was originally posted on Thisisbrandculture's YouTube Channel, February 22, 2011.

Dear PG&E Manager,

Kindly instruct your labor crew to expedite the gas line repairs.

Shame they don't use real stock. Even organic brands have nasty ingredients in them. Real stock has much more nutrition then anything you could get in a cube. Real stock is your best medicine when you are sick with cold, flu or a stomach bug.

Hello I have a question...what is softened sour cream? I've been getting this a lot when I look up recipes. Thanks. Can't wait for the apple-braised pork sounds good:)

You mean stay tuned, not stayed tune. Jesus man, doesn't anyone edit your posts?

Why waste my time editing with trolls like you around? (btw, you don't have a lot of friends do you?)

That was pretty cute, and looked good. I also love Jamie (such a hottie) ;)

Also, good call on "Snarn"...we all know the type.

I'm sure his heart was in the right place, just needs to learn some manners. Only I'm allowed to be rude on the blog ;)

I'm sorry if I upset anyone, this genuinely was not my intention. I still have no idea what it was that pissed you all off, but there go.

The first have of your comment was awesome and helpful...but, the second half just made u sound like a d-bag. Unless you were trying to be funny, which in that case, I'll have to use the longest running line on the blog... "I'll do the jokes" ;)

Chef John said...

Actually, make that "first HALF" of your comment (I'd hate to be busted for another typo!) ;)

I love butternut squash soup and what a great combination of seasonings. Trevor and Sally Oliver seem totally unpretentious.
Very quaint kitchen, flowery curtains and all :)

No offense but I cant understand why anyone would use "stock" cubes after they went to the trouble of growing their own vegetables. Even good plain water would have better. Aside from that, loving it. I loove all these soup recipes.

Maybe if ya' bribe the repair people, they'll work faster(?).

Bribe them. Bribe them with something delicious!

P.S. Since the topic came up
<- Most always uses the stock cubes... (hasn't experienced ill effects)

Whats your thoughts on stock and cubes? What about chicken base?

Chef John said...

I use them occasionally and have no problem with them as long as they are high quality all natural varieties. The cheap ones are just all salt.

Looks very similar to my own, except I add a bit of maple syrup, a roasted apple, and some coconut milk.

This recipe was really good. But I could not help myself and added 1 cup of heavy whipping cream after I blitz it, and it turned out awesome. Thanks to your "guest" chefs for the recipe.

Ha, ha,
but when I read about "gas problems", I thought this might be a recipe for people with, you know, "gas" problems!

I've just found your blog and found several recipes try. This one and your minestrone.

But is there a place on here where the recipes to print can be found.
I know I'm probably overlookiing it.

Just cooked it. It turned out awesome!

Like Renee asked, where can we find the recipe for Trevor's butternut squash soup? The video is great but I had some trouble with the accent when it came to the spices.

what do you think he set his oven at??? Maybe 375-400 degrees???

"One heap teaspoon each of cumin, smoked paprika, coriander and curry powder." This soup is really good, although I used Jamie's method of roasting: plunk the squash whole into the oven, scrape out.

Btw, methinks this video is an advertisement for stock cubes, so they used them.

A little late, I know.
