Goodbye Mom

My mother, Pauline, passed away on Mothers Day. It was peaceful, and she was surrounded by family. She was the youngest 83 year-old you’d ever want to meet. I don’t have the time or energy to write a long, thoughtful post, but I did want to let you know what was going on, and how much I appreciate all the kind words, and expressions of support. It means more than you’ll ever know. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. She was a great woman, and we all loved her very much. She will be missed.

Chef John, I just now saw this and I want to let you know how sorry I am for your loss. The blog is probably the last thing you want to think about right now, so please don't worry about getting back to it right away. Take all the time you need to grieve.

I'll never forget the first time I saw your mom make that pie crust. She made it look so easy (I still can't duplicate what she did). I remember thinking when I saw her that she looked like a fun and wonderful person to know. I thank you for letting us get acquainted with her through your blog. She won't be truly gone, because so many of us here will always remember her.

Dear Chef John,
it is with sadness that I write. I have watched you on Youtube for quite some time now, and today was the first time I actually linked to your food blog - only to discover that your mother passed away recently. I hope that you and your family are coping. You are a marvelous individual and an inspiration to many many people - I am sure your mother was extremely proud of you. She will always be with you in your heart. Take care.
With sympathy
Conor.

Condolences for your loss John.

Eternal rest grant unto Pauline, O Lord, and let Your perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

I dont mean to offend anyone with these words; as a Catholic this is the prayer I say for those who have passed away.

Howdy Chef,
My cooking mentor and surrogate mother Jane (in Austin, TX) passed away last year. She taught me much and I think it was how you also first learned. We smiled a lot in the kitchen. Now I'm sad again but happy that they passed the knowledge down to us as their forebears did for them. I'm glad I found you.
Brother, if you make it to Houston and want a great burger, beer, and hug then I'll be around. Hubcap Grill has a great selection.
And stay off as long as you need. I understand (for me it was Dad). God bless you and yours. Cheers.

My sincerest condolences Chef John. I found your post to be very thoughtful and touching, and what a beautiful picture of your mother!! Take comfort in having been loved and cherished by your mom - that is something that can never be lost. Unfortunately, my mother was abusive and it was more of a relief than loss when she passed. The only fond memories I have of my mom are food and cooking, thus my interest in your blog. It is truly special to have parents that love you. You are blessed to have had her, so I hope you find comfort and peace in your memories. Thank you for what you give to us by sharing your gift and love of cooking.

So sorry to hear from your loss chef.

Take your time to regain inspiration to update this wonderful blog of yours. And take care of yourselves there.

I myself am certain life goes on after we leave this physical plane and your mother hasn't really left you although you may not be able to see or contact her again... But she's still there... The grieving process we all must go through but, after that, the good memories will prevail. I lost my father 5 years ago and I did get an unbelievable sign from him later on (at the precise time I asked for it: I saw and heard a "meteor" landing very near just seconds after I asked to see a shooting star for his memory). I know he's still out there somewhere.

Unknown said...

All blessings upon you and your family, Chef John.

Sending you lots of love from Germany!

Hi Chef John, I know you don't know me from Adam and you have so many comments on here...you may not ever even read them all. But, I came across one of your videos today, then your YouTube channel, then your website and blog...
Then I read that your mother passed and saw your post that you were taking a break.
I just lost one of my sons on May 1st. He was 28. Two years ago, this very same week...we lost his father. And 28 years ago, this very same time of year, my 18 year old brother was killed. I know your pain. I read your words and thought, "I really don't know this man. But, I enjoyed the humor in his video, and feel like I just met him. I completely know what it feels like to become suspended in time...stuck if you will...shutdown even. Time just stops in your world and you have to back away because you just can't watch the rest of the world keep moving right now." So, even though you may not ever read this... I had to reach out anyway, in case you do at some point...scroll through it all and catch it. Know that I understand and my thoughts, prayers, and heart are with you. Kathy

Hi Chef,

I've read and implemented your recipes for years (some to rave reviews and some I screwed up) and have never commented. But I lost my mom a year ago and I feel I have to say something--I feel for you and your loved ones. A guy never gets over losing his mom. Stay strong, my friend. Cheers, Howard
