Bacon & Cranberry Bean Ragout and Public Apology to Mr. Bean

During this video, which features a rustic and deeply satisfying bacon and cranberry bean ragout, I make a joke about the great British actor Rowan Atkinson’s appearance at the Olympics. Based on all the thoughtful, politely worded comments I’m getting on YouTube, apparently I’m the only one in the world who’s not a huge Mr. Bean fan.

Based on the response, I’m clearly missing something. While I find Mr. Bean more creepy than comedic, I’ve been told to ignore the movies he did for American theaters (…”Ha! It’s funny ‘cause he fell down!”), and instead check out some of his brilliant work on British television. Well, that’s not going to happen anytime soon. I still haven’t finished catching up on all the Benny Hills.

Anyway, as usual, I’ll assume I’m wrong and Mr. Bean really is comedy gold. My sincerest apologies to Mr. Rowan Atkinson – not so much for my harmless one-liner, but for him possibly finding out about the slight, and having to read this lame excuse for a pork and beans post.

Oh yeah, the bacon and cranberry bean ragout! It was super tasty, and as I stated in the clip, would make a stellar side dish to pretty much anything coming off your late summer grill. I hope you give it a try soon. Enjoy!

Ingredients for 4 side dish portions:
1 cup shelled cranberry beans
1/4 cup minced shallots
4 or 5 slices of bacon
1 tsp olive oil
salt and pepper to taste
4 cloves garlic, crushed
2 cups chicken broth, or as needed
2 tsp chopped rosemary
2 tsp lemon zest
2 tbsp lemon juice
cayenne to taste
2 tsp extra virgin olive oil
1 tsp hot chilies
1 tbsp fresh herb like Italian parsley, chervil, oregano, etc.

Finally, I feel so relieved! There is one more human being in the world, who isn't a great fan of Mr. Bean! I felt pretty lonely with this tiny issue of mine... (Quite frankly I hate what he does on TV.) I watched what he made for English television, and it's really not a huge difference to me in terms of creepy and disgusting.
Great food, as always, Chef John, and of course great taste for humor and comedy. :)

A Ragout is a good place for Mr. Bean. Cheers!

I don't want anyone to soil their underpants... But I think I might give this one a go tomorrow. I would've saved that bacon fat, and drank it. You hit the wand firmly on the nail about Mr Bean, I am English, and Rowan Atkinson's a legend playing any other character, but Mr Bean gets firmly on my tits. That's it, except to say I wonder why the cranberry beans lose their colour while they cook? Ok.

Hey chef John! Mr Bean's creepiness (on which I concur) aside, this dish made it's way to my table for tonight's supper! I even had some beans my mom got me from farmer's market that looked just like those (even though I don't think she called them the same - you see, we're Portuguese). Our fridge was low on bacon so I added some salami to the mix and also a couple of chopped leftover sun dried tomatoes, and gosh... this was incredibly delicious!!! Thank you :) cheers form Portugal!

Holy. Moly. I too am a fellow Mr Bean disliker. I just don't get it and aren't even going to try. Anywaaaay. Recipe looks quite tasty. I'll likely save it for winter since beans and bacon just put me there. Great post!

Mr. Ben freaks me out! I'm not a big fan of him either haha~

This recipe looks delicious (like everything you make) and it makes me sad that I don't have half of these ingredients :(

Dear Chef John, what do you think about crushing some beans in the pot to have a creamy sauce?

This looks so good - but I'm in Australia and I've never heard of cranberry beans, so would borlotti beans be an acceptable substitute? I think they are related to cranbery beans. I can buy cranberry bean seeds to grow my own, but I don't want to wait that long... I love British comedy (don't get US comedy generally, its a cultural disconnect, no disrespect intended) but I've never had much joy in Mr Bean. Earlier stuff was much better.

Never seen those but if similar then should work. Thanks!

If fresh beans are unavailable, can dried beans be used, like ones from Rancho Gordo?

Chef John,

No, you're not wrong, Mr. Bean is horrible and I enjoy British Humor as long as Monty and Python on involved anyway. Also, I can't wait to show off a little with a "ragout".

Chef John,

If you only watch 1 Rowan Atkinson sketch, please take 5 mins of your tame and watch this one:

Seriously, it might change your life :)

And as always, thanks for the recipe - I'll give it a try next to some lamb shanks on the week end!

I have to agree with your criticism of Mr. Bean--it's probably the only British comedy that is not amusing to me--but I am a fan of all of your videos!

Anything with bacon, count me in!

Funnily enough, I don't think Rowan Atkinson is very fond of the character himself.
Blackadder is his best and probably one of the funniest history.

Way to go, Chef! Insincere, passive-aggressive apologies should always be the way to respond to criticism. You must be a hit with your friends and a great role-model to your kids (if you have any).

I'm afraid the humor went over your head.

Right, isn't that what people say when their humour sucks? "Oh, I think that Holocaust joke went over your head."

Mr Bean sucks. But Rowan Atkinsons earlier work is genious. Black Adder! I've seen all seasons over and over and it still makes me laugh myself to bits. I'm quite sure you would love it actually, if you're able to have an open mind about the actor. But everything I've seen of him when he's in his Mr Bean charachter (or Mr Bean like charachters like whats been made for the american viewers) just pisses me of.

I don't want to shit on British peewee Herman. But I'll say his attempts to physical comedy makes me reminisce about Leslie Nielsen. In a way that Nielsen slays! Nice ragot vid by the by. Don't know if it's available in Hawaii, but it has all the flavor profiles i enjoy. Mahalo for what you do. I reference and binge your sites often. Aloha! 🍍

Love the recipe. thanks. You always inspire me to cook. I certainly appreciate your fine sense of humor. It is just a little bit, like the spices but it is not offensive or gross. I am not big fan or Mr. Bean either. But I do not think your comment were out of line. Everybody have their own taste. But, yes, I am afraid he has become such a British symbol that you find him everywhere. Maybe he is the portrait of British humor, no idea.
