This video recipe was shot about a month ago, when my wife and I had colds. This is Michele's surefire cure to the common cold, and she likes to make it as soon as the first symptoms appear. You may have heard about the restaurants in China that are sort of like food clinics, and you order according to your symptoms. Various herbs and spices are combined to cure what ails you, and while there is no scientific proof that these dishes cure anything, as the old saying goes, "they can't hurt."
You'll notice the obvious lack of a voice-over in this video. I just wasn't feeling up to it at the time and figured I would go back and do one later. But, after watching it, and the cold-related production value, I decided to keep it in its original form. This "medicine" is great spiked with hot sauce to really clear the head, and using fresh ginger is also a must, as the dried stuff will not provide the same fabulous fumes. Enjoy!
Ingredients:
2 lbs chicken wings
water to cover by a few inches
handful of shiitake mushrooms
4 green onions
red bell pepper
6 cloves garlic
1/2 cups thin sliced ginger
soy sauce to taste
fresh chopped cilantro
hot pepper, optional

Hey! How did you know I had a cold???
I guess I should get sick more often!
aww... why discard the wings....
artistic value in this video went thru the roof compared to the other ones
Shame to eat when u cant smell or taste it.
I'm glad I don't have one, but after that week of wind & rain it can't hurt.
Wow! I like the style. hmm... this looks yummy!
Thanks... I didn't realize my narration was keeping these videos down! ;)
P.S. You discard the chicken since after cooking that long until they disintegrate, all the flavor in in the broth. The meat is basically tasteless.
do you have any good ideas as to what i can do with this tastless meat so as to not waste it?
As Michael Jackson would say...
eat it, just eat it.
Btw, no "what MJ really would say is..." will be posted!
not even a "WOOOOOOOO!!!"? lol
makes m wonder....
do you know how to make some basic doughs? like.... for muffins and the sort?
yes, yes I do. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Just because you add soy sauce, it doesn't make it asian =.=
yeah, soy, ginger, shiitake, not very common asian ingredients...
haha the subs crack me up. esp those towards the end...
I miss your naration :(
I usually watch your videos for the fun of it... but this one wasn't so fun.
I enjoy listening to what you have to say!
Zach
I also hate discarding meat no matter how tasteless :-). I suppose you could lightly season it and add it to a salad.
Why is this video not available anymore?!? I'm sick and need this soup!
its playing for me. ? Youtube has hiccups sometimes.
chef John,
I've read quite a lot of chicken soup recipes and I'm rather confused. Why do some recipes request that the vegetables be cooked first while others just add the veggies into the soup without being cooked first. Also nutrition-wise, is it better not to cook the veggies to retain their nutrition or will it not matter? Please advise thanks :)
i always cook veggie in the soup, no idea why someone would cook first. raw veggies are more nutritious but make pretty crunchy soups!
In Asia, we often cook the herb and vegi, everything , with the chicken in the beginning.
And it is not necessary to brown the chicken or mushroom. Add all the ingradients with some rice wine and cook in low heat for an hour, amazing flavor will come in the soup, and of course, it's a different soup! That's the fun of cooking - simply different sequence of adding in ingrdients would make a difference! Like chef John always says, try it and enjoy!
the soup looks awesome, but i really liked the music in the background... so could you please tell me title name and author, because i really like that style and would like to search for some more of that... thank you

its just a free clip that comes with imovie called shogun
i'm glad the cold did not affect your spelling. mmm, red bell pepppers :)
chef john,
i really love this soup. it rejuvinates me and has a sort of healing magic. i change a few things because soups are meant to be molested. i add the shiitake stems in the broth with the wings as they stew up. i also pull off the lean chicken parts after it cooks down and add it back in with the viggies. add a seranno pepper and some fresh no kneed bread and it's a great meal healthy or sick. i don't know why this soup makes me feel so great. (side note: free range organic chicken makes the best broth!
dear chef john...ahem *clears throat*
GET WELL, GET WELL SOON, WE WISH YOU TO GET WEEELL !
I am now locally famous as the soup guy - people love this so much, I'm making it for everyone - at least a pot a day is leaving my kitchen - so thanks Chef John (I think) LOL
Chef John,
You are probably my favourite internet persona. So naturally cool. I think I could listen to a playlist of your videos every night as I dozed off. Anyhow, for the last three years I've wanted to comment so I finally decided to. Waiting impatiently by the oven sipping on a beer, in Japan, salivating, your buffalo wing sauce in the pot on the stove, and your baked chicken wings in the oven. Just turned em. Anyway, the title of this recipe made me laugh, and thought it nigh time to comment. Will try the chicken soup tomorrow, got a little bit of a cold. Well.. all the best and you should have your own show.
Can you also plz write how to make this recipe? i am REALLY SICK and need to have this soup, but i cant access the video since youtube is blocked in my country :(
Plz chef!

No i don't! Make it all the way and just reheat it!
Can this be made with frozen wings? I bought a family pack of fresh wings and got lazy and put it in the freezer. Now I have strep throat and DESPERATELY need this recipe! Do I need to thaw first?
yes, you can! don't need to thaw! get well!
Actually, chicken soup is scientifically proven to help colds. Its more effective at clearing sinuses than any other liquid when digested!
