You may notice this video recipe looks and sounds a bit different. That's because it's not produced for About.com! I just felt like filming a dessert recipe, and uploading it to YouTube, just like the good old days (and by "good old days" I mean the days before I ran out of money filming free video recipes). This very simple, and quite old fashion berry crisp recipe, is perfect for those of you looking for a sexy, non-chocolate, Valentine dessert.
Any berry will work in this (even frozen if you must), but the dark, sweet blackberries are my favorite. Served barely warm, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, it just doesn't get much better than this. And, because there is some oatmeal mixed in with all the butter and sugar, it's practically health food. By the way, it will also give you a second reason to put on a pot of coffee after your Valentines meal. Enjoy!
Ingredients:
4 cups fresh blackberries, washed, drained well
1/3 cup granulated white sugar
2 tsp lemon juice
1/3 cup flour
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
3/4 cup quick cooking rolled oats
pinch of salt
1/2 stick softened butter (4 tbsp)

hey i just noticed that you shot the oven at a different angle. And Im the person who suggested that you make the "subtitles" to be "bigger"...I forgot to thank you. You always put the viewers first. :P
yay! foodwishes exclusive!
Ha, i love your humour!!!
Great recipe too
Welcome home, Chef!
I just got your "second reason for coffee" joke! Nicely done.
Yum yum yum!!
Hey! welcome back to your old friends in youtube
*has never been able to see an About.com video for some damned reason*
you sound like having a cold. there's a snuffle in video. thank you for the new recipe! take care!!
Could you use any berry for this? What berries would be best? Love the blog page!
I like this. Yummy. Can I do the topping over apples?
about videos should play on the About site if you follow the link under the clip.
no cold, just a cheap mic!
If I may quote myself from the post, "Any berry will work in this."
Raspberry, Blueberry would work great. If you want the fruit juice thicker add a spoon of cornstarch to the fruit mixture.
I would probably saute the apples to soften a bit before using, but they would be delicious.
I live in New England. There are 2 kinds of people. The Snow Aficionados, and The Flaker F*ckers. The majority are the latter. I'm in the former. So, if more people knew about this video, well...you can buy the folding chairs, and we'll buy the Toyotas to flip over.
Delish!
Feeling very inspired to do some baking soon.
Thanks for the share!
This looks great but I can't eat dairy products. Any suggestions on what to substitute for the butter?
Alas, there is no real substitute for butter. I would try one of the non-dairy margarines.
Btw, I assume you know what you can eat, but if you melt the butter and just use the oil, it really doesnt have the lactose that causes the problems.
Your recipe mentions use of quick cooking oats. Is that instant oatmeal?
I beleive instant is just add boiling water and done. quick cooking takes 5 minutes. But it would probably work for this.
I am looking for the directions to this recipe...can you email them to me at trisha@247moms.com
Can I also post about you on our blog www.247moms.blogspot.com great recipes
yes! post away. i don't have any written recipes, that's what the video is for. the ingredients are there though.
MMM.... Made this last night for a date. Let's just say it worked :)
Hey John, your videos are great. I've followed this recipe with Quaker quick oats and fresh wild blackberries and it turned out perfect. Tried again with some organic quick oats and the topping just wouldn't stay together or brown properly. I've still got more oats left, any suggestions?
sorry, no idea why they are different
I used the quick oats and the topping wouldn't stay together or brown either. :(
