I get a lot of cookie requests this time of year, and while
I’m not a fanatical cookie lover myself, I have posted videos for a fair number
of them. In fact, I have a new and exciting Christmas cookie post coming later
this week. In the meantime, I thought I’d repost this great recipe from three
years ago, featuring my favorite, Michele’s famous Chili Chocolate Cookies.
As most of you know, Michele is my lovely and talented wife,
and as I joke about in the original post, this would still be my favorite
chocolate cookie, even if I weren’t legally bound by marriage to say so. I hope you enjoy
this very chocolately blast from the past, and stay tuned for what I
hope will have many of you yelling, “Whoopie!”

just wanted to say, your wife's cookie recipe never lets me down. it always receives the highest praises. some people declared these cookies as "the best cookies in the world"
I LOVE your recipes in general, and this one really got to be the best :)
Thanks Chef John!
YEAH!! WHOOPIE PIES!!!
Hi chef John, I am an 18 year old aspiring chef. I watch your videos every day. In fact I look forward to it. You have taught me more than most chefs on foodnetwork. I've watched over 300 of your videos in the last month when I found you on YouTube. You make some of the most amazing food I've ever tasted and it is often what I make for my family for dinner. I cook every day trying to get better an better. Tonight I made your buttermilk fried chicken and Panko fried onion rings. By far the juicest and most flavorful fried chicken I've ever had in my entire life. And the onion rings were also amazing. I just wanted to let you know how much you have impacted my culinary lifestyle an continue to every day. Thank you, and keep up the good work. Ryan H.
Thank you for the kind words!! Glad you enjoy!
I do every time I make one of your recipes.
Handed two of these to a friend at work and I think they just might be THE cure for PM....oh so good. Thanks for reposting. I can't view the "old" video format on my tablet, so appreciate the new version greatly.
I never bake, but I want to try these....do I need to put parchment paper on my cookie sheet? You have some fancy French thing. Thanks! Oh, and although I said I don't bake I made your pumpkin pie yesterday - OMG, my husband is in love!!! With the pie, that's why I have to make cookies - to win him back! ; )
Yes, you can use parchment or a non-stick baking sheet. Thanks!
Just made these with gluten-free flour and without currants or Kahlua. Did put approx 2 T Sanka though..just for the effect that coffee gives to chocolate. AMAZING...crazy crazy good.
Decided to give them a try since the recipe didn't call for much flour in the first place, as a GF flour replacement sometimes makes a difference. In this case, it didn't make any difference.
I'm still torn on this (losing sleep over it) but I'm thinking the post-bite pepper in the teeth unpleasantness trumps the flavor enhancement so I might skip that ingredient next time.
I was wondering instead of using Kahlua, if I could use Creme De Cacao instead.
Hi Chef John!
Ok, full disclosure, I'm very new to the word of cooking but I can follow instructions. Handed out a few of these and now all my friends think I'm this awesome kitchen genius now. Your site is fantastic. Makes the whole endeavor less intimidating. Thanks for all the inspiration!
