Cooking with Headphones - Food Wishes on Your iPod!

This is a test. The link below will allow you to download the salmon recipe I posted yesterday to your iPod.

I'm not a big technophile, so I don't fully understand the impact of this, if any. What I'm hoping is you, my loyal visitors, tell me what this means.

Is this a big deal? Will you cook with headphones on while watching an iPod movie? Can I make money with iPod videos? What is the difference between a podcast and a iPod movie? Can someone make me an App?

Okay, enough with the questions. Get to work. Enjoy!

I think it is awesome. Not only will I be able to carry your recipes around and watch them while I eat my cup noodles at work, but I would also be able to have the instructions right on hand any time I venture a dish.

A podcast is something people subscribe to, and the content is automatically downloaded every time there's an update. An iPod movie is just a one-time thing. An app only works with certain genre of iPods, most widely, the iPod Touch and the iPhone.

I do often cook while using my iPod, but usually I'm listing to music or an audiobook with the iPod sitting in my back pocket. I don't think I'd want to have to keep touching the screen while I'm cooking. It might get all dirty.

However, sometimes I bring my laptop in the kitchen so I don't have to print out recipes. I just put a piece of plastic wrap over the keyboard to protect it.

Chef - that's great! I'm fortunate enough to have salvaged my daughter's old laptop to keep in my kitchen. It can only handle light duty, so storing my recipes electronically and watching your blog fit right in. Yes, I am so lame that I actually play your videos over and over (and sometimes stop in mid-vid to catch up) and have you virtually walk me through the recipes. However, with only 27" of counter space, the computer's across the room. Having this on an iPod would mean I can do the same, but without having to run across the kitchen to do it!

Works like a charm on the iPod Nano. I hope you start a podcast, that would be great!

I can't help you with the technical stuff, just wanted to put in my two cents on the whole making money thing. I stumbled across your website and LOVE it--the recipes are great, you are hilarious, and I even bought a DVD to give to my mother-in-law. The only thing holding me back from being your biggest fan ever is the adult material in some of your posts. I appreciated the warnings given for some of the video links, but my kids are around, curious about what I'm looking at online all the time and I just can't pull up your website when they're around.

If you want to draw a broader group of fans and paying customers, I'd suggest sticking with the food and tone down some of the sexy stuff.

Thanks, but if I really wanted a bigger audience I would put in more sexy stuff!

OMG, how did you miss Topless Tapas!

I, too, vote against toning down the "sexy stuff". Chef's racy humour is part of what makes this food blog stand out. Otherwise, he'd be Dave.

Hey Chef John!

Love the blog, keep up the good work!

As for podcasts, there's not much of a difference between iPod videos and iPod podcasts.

Basically, a podcast... at least for iTunes/iPods is a series of videos in your RSS feed. That's it. You basically just add extra tags to the feed that point to where your videos for each post are located. Then people can take the link to your RSS feed and add it in iTunes.

If you've worked with your RSS feeds before, you can find all the info you need here: http://www.feedforall.com/itune-tutorial-tags.htm

If this stuff is new to you, maybe I can help answer some questions for you.

A lot of people are getting the DS thingy with recipes, so this may work. It's a nice idea, but myself, I just woulnd't because I don't believe that cooking, getting your hands dirtish and touching expensive mini video players mix well, but that's me.

However I enjoy watching cooking videos on my trips with my iPod.

AFAIK podcast refers to audio/video shows available regularly you can add to your mp3/video player.

If by app you refer to mac os, then why do you want one to begin with?

Chef John said...

i meant the iPhone apps I see all over. the little programs you can add to your phone.

Ah, that's a good question indeed.

i was going a bit too geeky thinking of the .app extensions :P

This site is a wonderful gem, and "gives" viewers so much, but I think what Chef John needs help with is setting up an added viewing convenience that some viewers would be willing to pay for. Just guessing, but I would imagine he'd throw in a video or two, every so often that could only be seen exclusively by paying customers as an added incentive.

Personally, I really like the idea of having these recipes playing on my iphone. This is much easier than setting up my computer in the kitchen, and far safer, too. My phone screen is protected with a piece of plastic film, which I bought when I got the "skin" to protect the case, so I don't worry about having food on my fingers while using it.

I don't know how many have ever made and edited a video, much less tried to teach using this method, but it is very time-consuming, not to mention, the quality and expertise we are privileged to access here, but the chef, like most people, can only 'give away' so much of his time. Personally, I'd like to help in anyway I can to keep the "good thing" we have going (and growing), because Chef John rocks the socks off my stove!

Please can you go ahead with a podcast that we can subscribe to an download regularly! This would be great! We are going to transfer to the back end of Africa soon and it would be so cool to have regular new recipes we can follow on your podcast broadcasts. Please go ahead with it - would be so great.

I subscribe to several food podcasts through iTunes. You need to list your shows on iTunes, I believe the steps are on apple.com to talk you through submitting your podcast URL.

Most podcasts are free, so I don't know if charging for one would be a good idea. However I imagine that being on iTunes would be great to boost your audience, and then the advertising/merchandise money would just roll right in.

Waz and Lenny of crashtestkitchen.com do the podcast thing as well as put videos on their site, and they have a huge audience - this despite only doing a podcast every month, if that. I find your podcast much superior in terms of the food and presentation, so it's a shame you don't have the same kind of audience.

thanks everyone. I read the apple info, but I'm not clear what my podcast URL would be? Do I need a separate website. Where do I host the files? I'm still confused.
