Homemade Sports Drink – Because Greaterade > Gatorade

Michele was listening to sports radio a while back, and heard a story about how the Golden State Warriors, also known as the greatest basketball team in history, had banned Gatorade, and other similar drinks from their gym.

Knowing that the latest science shows drinking large quantities of sugar water is a terrible idea for your body and brain, they started making their own “sports drink,” featuring Himalayan pink salt.

My first thought was, “That’s soooo Northern California,” but the more I thought about it, the more I realized what a great idea that was, and it inspired this video for what we’re calling, “Greaterade.” All the ingredients in this are easy to find, and the whole procedure only takes minutes. Really, the only “work” involved is coming up with the perfect formula for your own personal tastes.

The amounts given here will get you very close to the commercial stuff, although it will not be as sweet, so feel free to experiment. With apologies to the big drink companies for all those lost sales, I really do hope you give this a try soon. Enjoy!

Ingredients for about 9 cups of Greaterade:
8 cups fresh cold water
3 tablespoons honey, or other sweetener to taste
1/2 teaspoon fine *Himalayan pink salt (mine was coarsely ground, so I used a rounded 1/2 teaspoon), or sea salt (or any pure salt)
3/4 teaspoon calcium magnesium powder (this is the one I used)
pinch cayenne
3/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
2 lemons, juiced
2 limes, juiced

* Note: this is NOT the pink salt we used for the ham video

any other juice combinations to make generic flavors?

How long does this keep in the fridge? Can it be frozen before adding the remaining water so you have kind of a concentrate?

Does anyone know how long this will last in the fridge?

Love your blog and videos, LOVE THEM. I'm getting all freaked out by asian flavour combos and recepies. And I'm trying out some bao buns, steamed buns with pork (or any other meat), at the moment. I would love to see your take on it!

Keep up the good work!

Chef john

I would recommend amending the ingredient title "pink salt" as it is also refers to sodium nitrate used in sausage making...would not want people using that in their sports drink...adding the word Himalayan would do the trick.

Hey Chef John,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but any chance you could do / got a recipe for a Protein Shake type thing? I know people toss any old stuff into them for what flavours they like, but specifically good ideas on how to get the protein without using a protein powder / store bought mix.

Thanks :)

Would skip heating the honey or at least try not to get above 40oC. Because above that temp honey looses most of the good stuff quickly. The powder can be replaced with pollen. Which is way better and quicker assimilated in our bodies, and contains lots of minerals, vitamins etc.

Great recipe and video as always!

Watched pretty much all of your videos, but this is the first one I attempted. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the salt to dissolve :-( Watched the video while I did it, and followed everything exactly but still wouldn’t work. Gutted.

I tried this and I recommend doing:
1 full cup of Orange Juice
1/4 cup of lemon/lime juice mix.
“Same salt and magnesium calcium powder”
“Five cups of water plus the dissolving water”
3 table spoons of honey
1 table spoon of can sugar

Makes about 60ounces of juice and is a little stronger on the taste side which makes thisa true sports drink rather than a flavored water.

I have a pretty small fridge, but I drink a fair amount of this. So I mix everything but the water and freeze it in a regular ice cube tray. A few cubes and some water go into my reusable bottle in the evening, and it's ready for my morning workout.
