Late Summer Haiku Challenge

To me, the photo below really captures what this time of year looks and feels like. It also inspired the following haiku. There is something enigmatic about the haiku. Its strict 5-7-5 syllable structure somehow bringing an openness to the poem. I look forward to reading your submissions.

Peaches wait for fall,

Getting sweeter all the time,
Moving into earth.

Time to relieve it of fruit
Apple pie is near

Fresh fruit falls to earth,
Time is scarce before decay,
Make precious this moment.

Encapsuled sunshine.
Fuzzy soft and velvet smooth.
My chin dripping juice.

Where is my chicken
Steak, potatoes, rice or pork
Drats! Haikus today!

in the earth you sink quickly
this day is over

It's raining today
Wet, cold, windy and drippy
I think I'll bake bread

Blackberries, peaches
Juicy cobbler intended
None left, ate 'em all

Jackie, yet again--sorry

Insects sip and slurp,
The peaches loose their insides,
Disappointed bite.

The bread is rising
Dinner guests are on the way
So no more haiku

PEACH HAIKUs:

I hold in my hand
Spring's rain and Summer's sweet sun
Time in a bottle

A fuzzy baseball
Peach fragrance invades my nose
I take a bite: crunch!

Juice drips down my chin
Warm nectar races shirt-ward
I need a napkin!

Nothing to do with the peaches, sorry, but my favorite haiku from a Threadless T-shirt:

Haikus are easy
But sometimes they don't make sense

golden split stone fruit
cut, orbs seared with flame and smoke
grilled sweet peach passion

(feel free to substitute "glass elevator" as the last line :) - I was SOOO glad I was not drinking chocolate milk when I read Vicki's comment............)

Run! While the sun still
smiles; or Thanksgiving tears weep.
Food babies abound.
