With Friends Like Mandometer, Who Needs Enemies?

Did you ever think to yourself, "I wish they made a dinner plate that would criticize me while I eat?" Well, thanks to a clinic in England, that very thing is now a reality!

At first glance I thought this device was intended to scold overeaters, but it looks like its real mission is helping people with eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. Still, I can't help but imagine setting a plate of chicken fried steak down and hearing, "Oh no you didn't!"

Waitaminnit - does that mean normal plates don't yell at you for having chicken fried steak? uh oh....

It's not something you can just buy, and is one means of helping individuals with eating disorders. These individuals have lost touch with the normal signals that most of us reading foodwishes take for granted.

[end soapbox]

"Oh no you didn't" ROTFL. I will be enjoying your chicken fried steak this evening, no biofeedback devices will be harmed in the eating of the meal.

All that nonsense and then finally it says "you're eating too slow". LOL :D

Kinda makes me mad that they have an insanely skinny girl in the ad, if it is truly designed to help recovering bulimics and anorexics... that's the male gaze for you though.

TBH kinda sad. If they actually showed an overweight person chowing down like crazy then fair enough, but a thinstick girl eating two bites...

I think it could be used to help people who are severely obese as well. Even though society doesn't feel sympathy for those people they too have lost touch with "normal eating" sensations and relations to food.

I think if it helps people don't knock it. It may not be for all patients but for those it works for I say good for them.

i took it a step further and went to the web site about the lovely mandometer. It's defently geared more for anorexic or bulimic patients. U got more points if bmi was 18.1 or lower a very unhealthy bmi to have as an adult.

I as a overweight person got a 9 and still could possible use this device but 9 was the minimal score to be be considered needing the device.

As for the comments about slow eating its true anorexic or bulimic patients will eat slower. its one of there lil tricks they use. So yes they have to be told to eat faster.

Chef John, I have to be honest with you, all these recent product placements on your website are becoming worse and worse(the chicken fingers video was extremely cringe worthy). They're slowly taking the joy out of visiting you blog.

I hope you decide to go easier on them in the future.

First of all, this is NOT a product placement. Just something that gave me a chuckle.

Secondly, if it wasn't for the occasional paid sponsorship this blog wouldn't exist. Do you work for free?

Thirdly, if you don't enjoy coming here anymore, don't.

It never ceases to amaze me how clueless some people are.

Hey Summer, I'm sure Chef J would love to hear how you'd run a FREE video recipe blog without any sponsors or ads. Please tell us!

Soon enough we'll all have something similar, mandated by the government of course:

Citizen, it's 6AM, time to get up.
Go brush your teeth
Shouldn't you be walking your dog by now, we wouldn't want to confiscate Rover from you
Citizen, it's that time again, pay your bills
Citizen, do not pay so much on your bills that you can't pay your taxes
